As 2010 draws to a close, the next few posts at Break the Mold will review the past year and look ahead to what’s in store in 2011 for Break the Mold and myself. I hope they will serve as a tool for you as you reflect on your year and set goals for 2011.
Not too many years ago, Christmas passed and a new year was beginning. The past year was filled with sorrow, struggle, and many rough patches. As I reflected about the past year and the upcoming year, I told myself this year would be better. There wasn’t any other option. It certainly couldn’t be worse, so it had to be better. I admit this philosophy was bleak, but somehow this train of thought gave me a glimmer of hope. I knew that the next year had to be better.
The next year of my life wasn’t great, but it was better. I made it through the rough patches by making better decisions and maintaining a brighter outlook. My attitude and outlook was an important factor in having a better year.
As 2010 comes to a close and 2011 begins, my philosophy is surprisingly similar. I believe that 2011 will be better then 2010. There is no other option.

Unlike a couple years ago, 2010 was an amazing year. I can’t believe all of the great things that happened. I got engaged to an amazing guy. I was able to quit the job that didn’t fulfill my passion, and start following my dreams. I moved 500 miles to spend more time with the people I love. I simplified. I wrote an eBook. I am a basketball coach. I went to NYC for the first time. I saw the lives of teenagers transformed and was part of an amazing community at Rocky River Presbyterian Church. I accomplished many of the goals I set in January of 2010.
Even though 2010 was great, it’s only the beginning of an amazing journey. I know it will only get better in 2011. I marry the man I love and celebrate this special day with my amazing family and friends. I will take a group of senior high youth to Washington DC to spend a week in mission. I will publish my first book. I will continue to pursue my passions and spend time with the people I love.
I have big events coming up in 2011. More importantly, I am excited and confident that 2011 will be an incredible year. I know 2011 will be the best yet.
Attitude and outlook is everything.
