The Reverb10 Prompt: Make. What was the last thing you made? What materials did you use? Is there something you want to make, but you need to clear some time for it?
I read the prompt this morning and it took me all day to figure out the last thing I made. I am not very crafty. I don’t “make” very many things On the other hand, I enjoy creating and designing when it comes to writing, graphics, and websites. But, there is something special and unique about making something these days. We live in a culture where we buy and not create or make.
After thinking for some time about this prompt, I finally came up with the last item I physically made. In October, I was babysitting my six year old nephew. Halloween was approaching and he decided that we should make a costume. We gathered up a bunch of cardboard boxes and decorated them with markers and glitters. Next, we taped the boxes together and cut out eyes and created the superhero Boxman. Boxman was a ridiculous costume, but my nephew and I had a blast making it together.
In our consumer culture, it’s easy to forget the joy of creating and making. I know most of the time I would much rather buy then spend time to make something. When I worked for Habitat for Humanity, I loved the building process and using my hands to build a house, to make something out of nothing. I love that my father made his own kitchen table. I know people who make scrapbooks or knit gifts for friends.
There is meaning and stories behind those things we make. There is joy in the process. I think it's time for me to incorporate making and creating more into my routine.
What have you made lately? What are you looking forward to making?

Interesting topic.
If making includes the process of writing, in the last month I've "made" a novel for NaNoWriMo (a an annual novel-writing event in November) and a ton of poetry for a birthday gift for my Mom.
I don't really make much else at the moment other than the occasional batch of cookies for family members who adore homemade treats.
In 2011 I look forward to starting a small container garden on my balcony. I'm also hoping to learn html and study Spanish once again.
